The Marshall County boy’s golf team is headed to the KHSAA State Golf Championship after winning the Regional Tournament Thursday at Paxton Park by 18 strokes over second place McCracken County, in a reversal of last season when the Marshals finished runner-up to the Mustangs.
With rain-soaked greens and fairways at Paxton Park Golf Course, the tournament was delayed nearly two and a half hours before play resumed around 12:30 pm.
Jay Nimmo, who finished individual runner-up in 2017 following a two-hole playoff with Lyon County’s Cullen Brown, won medalist honors with a 1-under 70, winning by two strokes over Mayfield’s Husten Lancaster who shot 72. Marshall County’s Tyler Powell finished third with a 2-over 73 and teammate Camdyn McLeod tied for fourth with McCracken County’s Conner Kirkham, both with 76. McCracken County’s Gavin Norsworthy and Murray’s Brogan Welsch tied for seventh with rounds of 79. Lancaster, Reynolds and Welsch qualified for state as individuals.
Adding to the Marshals success following Nimmo, Powell and McLeod, Nathan Clark shot 86 and Trey Wall 93.
Scoring for runner-up McCracken County behind Kirkham and Norsworthy, Warren Thomis 83, Garrett Rikel 85 and Peyton Wray 91.
That state tournament will be played October 4-6 at Bowling Green Country Club.
