Mountain Bike Team begins quest for sixth straight state title

The five-time Tennessee High School Cycling League State Champion Marshall County team began their quest for a sixth straight title Sunday in the first race of the season at Chickasaw Trace Park in Columbia, TN. A rain-soaking muddy start to the 2018 season saw perseverance by all riders from all teams in the TN league, a member of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).

At the end of racing, 12 Marshall County racers found a spot on the podium starting with the varsity boy’s race where Jaxon Story placed second and Grant Wilson third and in the girl’s varsity race, Alyssa McClain took third.

Alyssa McClain rode to a third place finish in the girl’s varsity race.

In the JV girl’s division, Presleigh Jennings took first and Dusty Bass fourth for the boy’s.

In the freshman girl’s race, Natalie Norwood earned the top spot followed by Olivia Myhand in second.

Claire Austin and Chase Binkley swept the girls and boys eighth grade races and Jace Story took the third podium spot for the boys. Memphis Ford placed fourth in the seventh grade boys race and first place went to Allie Burkeen in the sixth grade girls race.

Independent rider Gracie Pendleton and Hunter Connell of Smokey Mountain Bears took the win in the varsity races. Watt Hackney of Smokey Mountain Bears won the JV boy’s race. First place in the sophomore races went to Camilla Wilbanks with Williamson County Composite and Will Stacy with Harpeth Youth Cycling Composite and the freshman boy’s winner was Bond Almand with Smokey Mountain Bears.

The second race of the season is October 7th in Knoxville at the Baker’s Creek Preserve.
