As traditional in 2nd District soccer games, favorites aside, the competition always rises to the occasion. Tuesday’s game at Murray was no different as the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Marshals 2-1.The last time Marshall County and Murray girls met was in the 2017 1st Region Tournament championship game that ended in a 4-3 Lady Marshal victory after splitting their regular season games. Coming in the favorite, the Lady Marshals met a Murray team hungry for a win after losing all three of their games over the weekend in the Smokey Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg, TN.

Murray senior Parker Greer scored less than three minutes into the game for a 1-0 Lady Tiger lead, tied five minutes later by the Lady Marshals on a goal by Whitley Watwood and the game remained tied until the 56th minute in the second half when Greer gave Murray a 2-1 lead which held for the win.

Carmen Gunn, wearing face gear due to a broken nose, will miss a week of play following surgery.

Head Coach Michael Boone said they were disappointed in the loss and in their play, adding that Murray found a way to get it done and they didn’t do a very good job containing Greer and the chances she got, she finished them off with the two goals.

“We couldn’t piece things together”, Boone said. “You would think getting Carmen back would be a shot in the arm. We just weren’t able to connect enough passes.”

Murray had 10 shots in the game, nine on goal and three corners. The Lady Marshals had nine shots, seven on goal, five corners and seven saves by Carlen Whirley. Up next is Madisonville-North Hopkins Thursday in a home game. Madisonville is 5-1 after losing their first game of the season Monday against Henderson County.
