The Marshall Coounty boys golf traveled to Lexington this past weekend to play in the Dunbar Classic Invitational golf tournament at Kearney Hill golf course (par 72). The field of teams competing were the best high school golf teams in the state of Kentucky and the tournament had the feel of a state tournament round.
The weather forecast did not look good going into Saturday but mother nature only forced one severe weather delay. The course was set up at 6,938 yards long was playing longer due to wet conditions.
The Marshals had a team score of 316 and placed in 10th out of the 20 teams competing. Taylor Co. won the tournament with a score of 279 (9 under par). Lexington Christian and St. Xavier tied for 2nd with scores of 288.
The Marshals were led by Tyler Powell with another solid round 72 (tied for 11th). Jay Nimmo was right behind with a score of 74 (tied for 19th). The remaining Marshals scores were Camdyn McLeod 82 (tied for 65th), Nathan Clark 88 (tied for 84th) and Drake Butler 89 (tied for 90th).
“We knew that the field of teams and players were the best in the state”, Coach Keith Bell said. “We traveled Friday to play a practice round to learn a little about the course. For the first time to play this course, the weather conditions and the length of the course just over 6,900 yards I was pleased to see how our players responded. Hitting fairways were key to lower scores today, the rough was some of the toughest we had seen this year.”
“Tyler had a solid round of even par, he had several opportunities for birdies and could have had a sup par score. Jay played well and was coming off a week of golf in North Carolina where he won a 3 day AJGA tournament (his 2nd AJGA tournament win) earlier in the week.”
Bell said his was a good test for our team midway through the season and I hope this experience for our players will prove beneficial during post-season play.
