Thursday night storm leaves downed trees, power outages across the area

This photo taken by the US National Weather Service in Paducah Thursday evening is a look at the very impressive shelf cloud moving into the area that produced 62 mph winds.

Marshall County 911 reported a snapped utility pole and power lines over the roadway in Calvert City which blocked  KY 1523/Oak Park Boulevard between US 62 and 5th Avenue following strong storm winds that blew through the area Thursday evening. The area was closed for three to four hours for repairs.

Just a few of the numerous reports from around the area included many locations of trees blocking highways in Livingston County and most of the county was without power last night.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Calloway County Highway Maintenance Crew received reports of numerous trees down in the southern portion of the county.

In McCracken County, trees down at various locations including Husband’s Road which was blocked between Sunset and Homewood in the Farley area due to downed trees mixed with downed power lines that took service out for several homes. Work on KY 2187 in this area will close the road until late Friday afternoon.

Also reported in McCracken County, KY 2187/Husbands Road was blocked by downed trees at several locations south of Interstate 24 and additional highways are reported blocked in southern McCracken County as well as a  powerline reported down across Hinkleville Road by the Mall.

Windows were blown out and in some of the downtown businesses in Paducah.

Power was restored by crews overnight to about 5,000 homes by the West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative after the severe thunderstorm tore down power lines and snapped several poles across WKRECC’s four-county service area. This morning, about 1,900 members are still without power and repairs continue.

The event which meteorologists referred to as a “bow echo” began in Nebraska and made a turn down through eastern Missouri and western Illinois into our area in western Kentucky. The highest measured winds in Marshall County occurred in the northern part of the county at 53 mph according to the NWS in Paducah.
