Lady Marshals beat #3 Ballard in Saturday’s Best of the West

Gabbi Lovett pitched all seven innings in the Lady Marshals 2-1 win over Ballard, allowing seven hits, one run and struck out two.

In Saturday’s Best of the Best in Bowling Green, the Lady Marshals handed #3 Ballard just their third loss of the season in a 2-1 victory in their last of three games at Buchanon Park. Friday against #10 Holy Cross (Louisville), the Lady Marshals lost 9-4 and in their early game on Saturday, lost a close contest to #8 Apollo 5-4.

Against Holy Cross Friday evening, the Lady Marshals found themselves down 4-0 after two innings but scored runs in the third inning on a triple by Gracey Murt and brought in two runs in the fifth on singles by Murt and Cayson Conner to trail 5-3. Holy Cross scored four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 9-3. A single by Sarenna Tomassi brought in the Lady Marshals final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Murt led the Lady Marshals at the plate with a single, triple and two RBI’s along with Tomassi who was 3 for 4 with a triple and RBI. Carson Goatley earned the win for Holy Cross in three innings on the mound, allowing four hits, one run and struck out five.

Holy Cross won all three of their Best of the West games, beating Webster County 5-4 and McCracken County 4-3.

In their first game on Saturday, the Lady Marshals trailed 2-0 after Apollo’s first at-bat and quickly got to work tying the game up in the bottom of the first, scoring on singles by Murt and Addie Young. They took a 4-2 lead in the second inning, Kaycee Kemp scoring on a passed ball and a single by Presley Jezik.

Apollo tied it 4-4 in the sixth inning then went on to score the go-ahead run for the one run win. Kemp singled and Pea walked to get runners in scoring position in the bottom of the sixth but were left stranded.

Haley John earned the win for Apollo in six innings, allowing six hits and four runs. Tia Thorpe and Gabbi Lovett shared pitching duties for the Lady Marshals.

Apollo defeated Male 5-4 on Friday and fell to McCracken County 7-1 on Saturday.

In their 2-1 win over Ballard, an early first inning 1-0 lead that came on a double by Murt, held up until Ballard got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game. The Lady Marshals took the lead and the win in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Conner.

Lovett, who pitched all seven innings, got the Lady Marshals out of the seventh inning for the win, leaving two Ballard runners stranded on base with the final out.

In their two other games in the Best of the West, Ballard beat South Warren 4-2 and Taylor County 7-0.
