Marshals earn wins over St. Mary, Hopkinsville

Head Coach Rob McDonald and Cole Griggs on third during a recent home game. Griggs was 1 for 3 with a double and 1 for 4 with an RBI in games last week.

The Marshals picked up two wins this past week, 4-2 over St. Mary and 5-4 over Hopkinsville, to improve to 13-7 overall.

Tuesday against St. Mary, the Marshals led 2-0 early, scoring in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Dalton Andersson and single by Dawson Smothers. St. Mary tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI ground out by Jack Bell and single by Brady Merrill.

Two runs for the Marshals in the top of the fifth inning came on a sacrifice fly by Andersson and run scored on a passed ball for the 4-2 win. Jordan Riley picked up the win in four innings on the mound, allowing one hit, two runs and struck out three.

Jordan Riley picked up the wins from the mound against St. Mary and Hopkinsville.

Thursday at Hopkinsville, the Marshals trailed 2-0 early after the Tigers scored on a wild pitch and error. Their 2-0 lead held until the third inning when the Marshals scored on a ground out by C.J. Johnson and tied the game in the fifth on a Cole Griggs ground out that brought in Riley Gillespie.

Hopkinsville took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth on an error, then the lead swung back to the Marshals in the top of the sixth on a 2-run single by Gillespie. Hopkinsville tied the game up again in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

On to the eighth inning, Buchmeier grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Gillespie which gave the Marshals the 5-4 win on eight hits. The win went to Harris on the mound in six innings, allowing four hits, four runs and struck out five.
