Marshall County Fiscal Court is considering changes to its Hardin Community Building rental deposit after receiving quotes on getting new locks.

Judge Executive Kevin Neal brought the issue before fiscal court on Tuesday during their regular monthly meeting. Neal said it could cost taxpayers $150 to rekey existing locks, while the security deposit encouraging users to return keys is only $20.

“The deposit in the lease agreement is $20,” Neal said. “They’re having a problem with individuals paying $20 to get the keys and then not returning the keys. We’ve got individual out there with keys that could gain access to a county facility.”

Neal said the county had only received one quote so far, but would be seeking others.

Commissioner Bob Gold suggested switching to an electronic keypad.

“I know it would be a little bit more, but then you could change that code whenever you wanted to,” Gold said.

Also during the meeting, the fiscal court:

— Held a first reading of the county’s 2018-2019 budget. If passed at the court’s next meeting, the county will operate off $20.6 million. A copy of the proposed budget is available in the judge executive’s office.
— Agreed to purchase a four-wheel drive vehicle for the Marshall County Coroner’s office. The office will have to trade in a van it currently uses, along with an additional $900.
