Lady Marshals 1-2 in Elizabethtown against Kentucky’s top teams

Sarenna Tomassi at the plate against McCracken County, hit a double against Holy Cross and two singles against Scott County Saturday in Elizabethtown.

This week’s Kentucky high school softball rankings have Marshall County at #13 and in three games Saturday in Elizabethtown at the Big M Chevrolet Classic, the Lady Marshals played current #11 Holy Cross, #1 Scott County and #8 Apollo. Fourteen of the top 25 teams in the state competed in the classic.

They opened play Saturday morning with a 6-0 shutout over Holy Cross, scoring all six runs in the first two innings. Sarenna Tomassi and Addie Young both hit a double with singles coming from Layne Pea, Riley Piercefield and Cayson Conner. Gracey Murt had two RBI’s with one each from Young, Aubree Jo Kemp and McKenzie Elkins. Kemp took the win on the mound in three shut-out innings and striking out two.

In game two against Scott County, the Lady Cardinals led 3-0 after the first inning, added two runs in the third and one in the seventh in their 6-3 win over Marshall County. The Lady Marshals got on the board with a run in the second inning and scored two in the seventh. Savannah Hairgrove hit a double, two hits a piece by Tomassi and Elkins and one each from Charley Pursley, Piercefield and Presley Jezik. Hairgrove had two RBI’s and Tomassi one.

Scott County hitters were Hannah Davis and Nani Valencia with doubles and a home run by Kennedy Sullivan. Kelsey Southard went the distance on the mound in the win, allowing eight hits and three runs. Kemp took the loss for the Lady Marshals in five and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits, four runs and struck out three.

Payton Blades did it all for Apollo in their 6-3 win over the Lady Marshals in their final game Saturday. She was 4 for 4 at the plate with two doubles and two home runs, bringing in three runs and pitched five and two-thirds innings for the win, allowing just one hit and no runs.

Presley Jezik hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second that gave the Lady Marshals a 3-1 lead before Apollo scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth. Hits also came from Young, Conner and Piercefield with RBI’s from Murt, Young and Jezik. The Lady Marshals utilized four pitchers in the loss.

Tonight’s game at home against Union County has been cancelled. Tuesday they will host #3 Christian County at 6:00 and at home again on Thursday against Calloway County.
