The Calvert City Council approved Monday an airport advisory board.

The Calvert City Council approved formation of an airport board during their monthly meeting Monday.

The council held a brief discussion after the ordinance’s second reading. The creation passed unanimously, while councilman Gene Colburn questioned language pertaining to authorities and responsibilities.

City Attorney Greg Northcutt said the ordinance is something that can be changed.

“A lot of this [ordinance] came from meetings and out of my head,” Northcutt said. “The fixed-base operator has the real skin in the game out there because he’s trying to sell fuel and do his thing.

“Because we’ve never had an airport before, we’re kind of flying blind. If we make three or four months or years and realize this isn’t working exactly right, changing that list of powers and duties is just two readings of an ordinance. Hopefully we won’t be in the same place in five years that we are right now, hopefully we’ll know more about how to run an airport than we do right now.”

Northcutt said the board will hopefully be able to give the FBO what he needs to make the airport operate.

Tim Haskell, who has been advising the city, said the city’s board will help it move forward.

“This advisory board is unique in the state of Kentucky, but it is not unique in other states, Haskell said. “The one that I am most familiar with happens to be the town that I live in…. Where the advisory board advises the council, and the city manager and or the mayor have the signatory power of the board.”
Haskell said the board would have leverage with the council, who would maintain control.

Also during the meeting, Haskell informed council members that the contract he was operating under allowing him to work with the city had expired. He urged the council to begin the process of advertising for advisory services.
