Work to bring a McDonald’s restaurant back to Calvert City is continuing.

The location at 3442 U.S. Highway 62 in Calvert City was destroyed in a midday blaze on Jan. 2, despite efforts by several local fire departments. Calvert City Administrator John Ward on Monday told city council members that plans to build a new store are developing.

“McDonald’s is moving forward, they’ve got a development plan public hearing Monday night,” Ward said. “We’ve been working with them pretty heavily, especially last week. We’ve been on the phone back and forth [with their engineers] to make sure they’ve got everything they need moving forward.”

At last month’s Calvert City council meeting, mayor Lynn Jones said plans are to have a new building with a smaller footprint.

“The building will not be as large as the previous building,” Jones said. “They don’t often need that space to sit empty because people are not in there eating, they’re eating in their car.

“We’re excited about McDonald’s rebuilding in that location,” Jones said. “It serves a great public service. They do a lot for the community.”

Council members discussed work on a new building starting in early May at the same location.
