Marshals split games in Big Orange Classic

Dawson Smothers heading to home plate last week against St. Mary. Smothers had a hit against Fort Zumwalt and a single, double and 2 RBI’s against Clayton, MO in the Big Orange Classic.

The Marshals fell to Fort Zumwalt South, MO 10-4 on Friday and earned a 5-inning 11-1 win over Clayton, MO Saturday in the Big Orange Classic.

Fort Zumwalt’s win came on 13 hits, led by Joey Spotanski who went 3 for 5 with a double with Blake Lawson picking up the win on the mound in four innings of work, allowing four hits and three runs. Marshall County hits came from Ty Buchmeier, Dawson Smothers, Jordan Riley, CJ Johnson, Tyler Belcher and Austin Stockdale. Johnson, Belcher and Stockdale had the Marshals three RBI’s in the game.

Trailing 5-0, the Marshals cut it to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a Johnson’s RBI single, a ground out RBI by Belcher and Stockdale’s 1-run single but Fort Zumwalt’s bats continued to connect, picking up four more runs in the fifth and a final run in the sixth.

Against Clayton, MO on Saturday, the Marshals 11-1 win in five innings came on 10 hits and no errors. With a commanding 6-1 lead, the Marshals scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the win, scoring a run on a single by Jackson Beal, RBI single by Buchmeier, sacrifice by Griggs and 2-run double by Riley.
