Marshals open season with 11-0 win over St. Mary

Marshall County senior Blain Bizzle picked up the win on the mound in the Marshals 11-0 win over St. Mary.

The 2018 baseball season for the Marshals finally got underway under first-year Head Coach Robert McDonald following Monday and Tuesday’s weather related cancellations, adding to the schedule Thursday’s home opener against St. Mary. In five innings on seven hits, the Marshals beat the Vikings 11-0 behind a trio of pitchers in Blain Bizzle, Brock Anderson and Riley Harris allowing one hit each in their time on the mound.

Sophomore C.J. Johnson led the Marshall County hitters with a double in the bottom of the first inning, single in the bottom of the fourth inning and two RBI’s. Senior Jackson Beal had two singles and a RBI, senior Dalton Andersson a single and three RBI’s and junior Cole Griggs hit a single with two RBI’s.

The Marshals 3-run first inning began on walks by Beal and Ty Buchmeier and the bases loaded when Dawson Smothers was hit by a pitch. Andersson’s one out single scored both Beal and Buchmeier followed by Johnson’s double that brought in Smothers.

St. Mary left two base runner stranded in the top of the second inning and one in the top of the fourth before the Marshals big 8-run fourth inning put the game away. The eight runs came on a walk to Jordan Riley with the bases loaded that brought in Skyler Brown, Smothers was hit by a pitch for the second time which brought Beal to the plate, a walk to Andersson brought in Buchmeier and an RBI single by Griggs scored Riley with Smothers scoring on the throw for an 8-0 lead. A single by Johnson scored Jacob Landis – courtesy runner for Andersson, Stockdale’s ground out scored Griggs and Beal brought in Johnson with a single for the 11-0 win.

Marshall County will play Clayton, MO Friday at 9:00 in the 2-day Big Orange Classic which includes St. Mary, Graves County, Caldwell County and Mayfield in games on Saturday.
