Calloway County ends Lady Marshals season in 61-40 win

Cayson Conner led the Lady Marshals in scoring with 10 points in the 4th District tournament game against Calloway County.

For the past five straight years, Marshall County has ended the Calloway County season in the first round game of the 4th District Tournament but the Lady Lakers broke that streak Monday at Murray by defeating the Lady Marshals 61-40 and earning a spot in the Region I Tournament for the first time since the 2010-2011 season. Calloway County will meet Murray High on Wednesday in the 4th District Championship game.

The Lady Marshals finish the season 15-14 under first year Head Coach Martin Clapp and will return the entire roster with the exception of one senior, Chloe Kerrick. Calloway County will be a major force in the 4th District for many years to come with leading scorers, freshman Elle Carson and sophomore Charlie Settle.

Chloe Kerrick, the only senior on the roster, played her final game for the Lady Marshals.

Carson and Settle combined for 51 of the Lady Lakers 61 points in the win. Settle led with 27 points and 12 rebounds and Carson added 24 points. The Lady Marshals had 10 players in scoring figures led by freshman Cayson Conner with 10 points.

Leading 6-0 to start the game, the Lady Marshals held the lead until the final minute of the first quarter when a basket by Carson who drew the foul and added the free throws gave Calloway County a 12-10.

Trailing 18-14 in the second quarter, Calloway County held the ball in the closing minute before sending it under the basket to Settle who missed but was fouled with 4.7 seconds left, hitting both free throws for a 20-14 halftime lead.

Down by 11 in the third quarter, a basket by Whitnee Miller cut it to nine but the Lady Lakers finished the quarter out on an 8-2 run to lead 38-22. Both teams had their highest points totals in the fourth quarter that began on three straight 3-pointers, two by Tera Colson and one from Carson for Calloway.

The Lady Marshals trailed by 14 points with just under three minutes remaining, then sent four different Calloway County players to the free throw where they converted on 10 to lead 61-37 with the final three points of the game coming on a free throw by Halle Langhi and basket by Emily Bridges.
