The Lady Marshals were back on the court in competition Friday in the 9th Gunner’s Magic Train Classic following a 10 day weather break. In their second meeting of the season, Marshall County (11-6) and McCracken County (6-11) tipped off in the 5:00 game. The Lady Mustangs beat the Lady Marshals in their first game in Paducah 49-45 and they came out on top again Friday, winning 59-49, marking the first two wins over the Lady Marshals after losing the first nine dating back to their first consolidated season in 2013-2014.

Baskets by Cayson Conner and Whitnee Miller gave the Lady Marshals an early 4-0 lead, a lead they never relinquished in the first quarter behind six more points from Conner, four from Miller and two points by Tera Colson to lead 16-9.

Following a second quarter opening basket by McCracken County’s Sarah Adams, Colson and Layne Pea dropped in consecutive threes to put the Lady Marshals up 22-14. The Lady Mustangs followed that up with two straight threes of their own from Meagan Hayden to cut the lead back to five points. McCracken County scored the next four points to pull to within one point of the Lady Marshals prompting a time out by Head Coach Martin Clapp.

A 3-pointer by Hayden gave the Lady Mustangs their first lead of the game at 24-22, quickly tied on a basket by Lorin Powell and two free throws from Conner put Marshall County back up by two before a basket at the buzzer by Marlee Morehead tied the game up at 26 at halftime.

The Lady Mustangs out-scored the Lady Marshals 14- 7 in the third quarter, dropping in another buzzer beater, this time on a 3-pointer by Abby Ellington, for a 40-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Six straight points were scored by Colson on scoring fouls and free throws to pull the Lady Marshals to within three points but that would be as close as they would get, trailing by eight with 1:49 remaining, and ten points at the final buzzer.

The Lady Marshals will play their second game in the Gunner’s Magic Train Classic against Hamilton, IL at 4:30.
