Lady Marshals win 2nd District Championship

After two overtime periods and a round of penalty kicks, the Lady Marshals emerged as the 2nd District Champions, defeating Murray 2-1 in Thursday’s title game. This is their first district title since the 2013 season and their first trip to the regional tournament since the 2014 season.

Murray advanced to the championship game after their 2-1 win over Graves County in a contest that also went into two overtime periods and penalty kicks.

Murray’s Parker Greer scored before the halftime break to give the Lady Tigers the 1-0 edge and led in shots in the half with 10, six on goal while the Lady Marshals had six first half shots, five of them on goal. Carlen Whirley had four saves in the half.

Camryn Crass tied the game at 1-1 in the second half, a half that saw yellow cards issued to both sides to add to the two yellow cards for each side in the first half and great saves by Whirley that led to the first overtime period.

At the end of two five minutes overtime periods, the two teams were still tied 1-1 leading to penalty kicks which led to the Lady Marshals win, successfully converting PK’s from Camryn Crass, Carmen Gunn, Kylee Crass and the game winner by Alli Chancellor.

Marshall County will host the 1st Region Tournament next week and will play St. Mary in the first round.

All District Tournament Team selections were Bailey Wood, Camryn Crass, Carmen Gunn, Loralei Samson and Kylee Crass.

Calloway County won the boy’s district title following the girl’s game, beating Graves County 3-0. Marshals making the All District Tournament Team – Seth Strader, Nate Moore, Daniel Gardner and Austin Stockdale.
