Benton to host fall clean-up week; Monday trash collection discontinued

The City of Benton is looking to spruce up for the season.

Mayor Rita Dotson said the city will host a fall clean-up week beginning Sept. 25 and running through Sept. 29. Residents may set items at the edge of their yards for pickup. Tires, batteries, appliances, paint, oil or chemicals and hazardous wastes are not eligible for city pickup. For more information visit www.cityofbenton.org.

The city is also making some changes to its trash pickup routines. Benton will no longer run Monday trash collection after Sept. 25. Routes typically picked up on Monday collection will be serviced on Fridays; trash collection will on Wednesdays and Fridays will continue as normal.

“We didn’t have enough customers,” Dotson said. “And he’s able to easily pick everybody up Wednesday and Friday, and that’s great with me because you don’t have the truck running through town and traffic backed up every Monday now.”

While Monday trash pickup will no longer be available, should a holiday fall on a Monday, trash collection will be set back a day as previously gathered, Bethany Cooper, city clerk and treasurer, said. Wednesday and Friday pickup will take place on Thursday and Saturday in that instance.

The city will send letters of notice to affected customers.
