In their final tournament of the season before the September 25th Regional Tournament at Paducah Country Club, the Marshals played Saturday in the Muhlenberg County Invitational at Central City. According to Coach Keith Bell, the past three years the Marshals have not performed well in this tournament but 2017 proved to have a different result, taking the win with a team score of 310, nine strokes over second place Owensboro Catholic

In a field of 16 teams, Jay Nimmo, Hayden Riney of Owensboro Catholic and Garrett Crabtree of Hancock County were tied for first after shooting an even par 71. Riney could not stay for the playoff that began on hole #10 between Nimmo and Crabtree. Nimmo missed his par putt on the first playoff hole and Crabtree sunk his to earn individual medalist honors.

Behind Nimmo’s 71, Camdyn McLeod shot 76, Tyler Powell 80, Grant Hackney 83 and Nathan Clark 91.

“I was really pleased with the way our players used course management on most holes, a skill that will be needed when we play in the regional tournament”, Bell said. “Our team has not played well in this tournament the past three years so there was some reluctance to come back this year.  I asked them to go out and prove to themselves that they could play well on this course.  They did just that and that should build confidence going into the regional tournament.”

The Marshals will play some practice rounds this week at the Country Club of Paducah. Bell said they will be focused on preparation with a goal to make a third straight appearance in the state tournament.

“I like our chances at the regional tournament, but McCracken and Mayfield have proven they can beat us”, Bell said. “However, Marshall has beaten both of those teams during the season so it should be a dogfight. You can’t forget about Calloway, Murray and Graves either, they will be fighting for a place in the state tournament also.”

The Marshals will play at Benton Country Club Monday against Calloway County in the annual Ryder Cup match.

The team took second their match on Thursday at Miller Memorial in Murray against Murray and Trigg County. Nimmo and Powell led with rounds of 39, Hackney shot 41, Nathan Clark 45 and Camdyn McLeod 46. The Marshals team score of 164 was three strokes behind first place Murray with 161 and Trigg County shot 192. Murray’s Brogan Welsh earned medalist honors with a 1-over par 36.
