Marshall County splits district double-header at Murray

Seth Strader had a free kick against Murray that was finished off by Daniel Gardner for a goal in the Marshals 3-1 win over the Tigers.

Murray handed the Lady Marshals their first district and regional loss Tuesday in a 5-2 victory. Parker Greer scored all three of the Lady Tigers first half goals for a 3-2 halftime lead with Marshall County goals coming from Camryn Crass and Bailey Wood on an assist from Crass.

Camryn Crass scored a goal and had an assist in the Lady Marshals loss to Murray.

Murray’s Angela Gierhart and Lydia Grogan scored back to back goals in the second half to put the game away for the Lady Tigers. Murray had 11 shots, 10 on goal and benefited from a great game by keeper Kennedy Keller with 13 saves, defending against the Lady Marshals 18 shots, 15 of which were on goal.

“We had a hard time finishing”, Coach Michael Boone said. “Their goal keeper had a heck of a night with a number of quality saves.”

The Lady Marshals will play a JV-Varsity double-header on Saturday at Owensboro against Owensboro Catholic starting at 10:00 am.

The Marshals played the second game of the misty, gloomy night scoring their first goal by J.J. Evans 11 minutes in, then took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Daniel Gardner off of a free kick by Seth Strader. Murray’s Abongo Adongo’s goal was saved by Marshall County keeper Tyler Belcher to protect the 2-0 halftime lead.

Nick Bokeno put the Tigers on the board in the second half on an assist by Zak Mathis, which would be their only score of the game. Gardner scored again on an assist by Austin Stockdale for a 3-1 Marshall County lead with a little over nine minutes remaining.

Frustration set in for Murray in the closing minutes with yellow cards issued and one red card on Ryan Messenger as the Tigers fall to 3-6 and the Marshals improve to 7-2. The Marshals had 11 shots, two on goal while Murray had 15 shots with nine of those on goal.

“Lucky and fortunate to have the players we have”, Head Coach Donnie Heath said. “I cannot credit them enough tonight, tough environment against a district opponent, and for them to come out with the attitude and the character they displayed, especially the first half…I could not be more proud of them.”

The Marshals will host #2 ranked Hopkinsville (7-1) on Thursday at Colburn Stadium.
