Marshals pre-season scrimmages build toward season opener on August 18th

Mason Green carries the ball in the Marshals Orange-White scrimmage Friday.

The 2017 edition of the Marshall County football team conducted an intrasquad Orange-White scrimmage Friday evening. The 2017 Marshals are 60 members strong from the freshman class through seniors. The Marshals are building upon a 5-6 2016 season under fourth year Head Coach Evan Merrick who was the 2016 5A District 1 Coach of the Year.

“I felt like the scrimmage was a productive night for us overall”, Merrick said. “We still have some improvements to make in some places but I felt the guys played hard and gave us a good look. Giving ourselves a chance to practice game situations is beneficial for both players and coaches as we get ready for the season.”

“Now it’s time to put ourselves up to the test against another school next week one more time before the season begins at Fort Campbell”, Merrick added. The Marshals will play in a three-team scrimmage on Friday at Paducah Tilghman, starting with a scrimmage against Tilghman at 7:00 followed by a scrimmage with Warren Central.

The Marshals return All-WKC players, seniors Skyler Smith, Mason Green and Grant Utley and junior Austin Riley. Green finished the 2016 season ranked seventh among rushing leaders in Class 5A with an average of 124 yards per game. Smith finished 2016 ranked 13th in passing with 1,628 yards and 17 touchdowns.
