Marshall County boys Region 1 Class 3A runner-up, several qualify for state meet

BENTON – Marshall County automatically qualified five individuals and three relays for the May 20th KHSAA State Track and Field Championships and the rest will have to wait and see but many more expected qualify. The top two in each event at each regional championship get the automatic qualifications and next best 10 times/heights/marks qualify for a total of 24 entries plus ties, into each event.

Paige Henson placed third in the triple jump with 31-10.00.

The Marshall County boy’s team, the two-time reigning Region 1 Champions, lost that title to Daviess County by 11 and a half points, swapping places after last years Marshall County win by three points over Daviess County, taking the title after the final event, the 4 x 400 meter relay.

Jackson Brown won two Region 1 titles Friday at Marshall County High School in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. He was joined by Cameron Thurman who won the Region 1 title in the shot put with a personal best throw of 51-08.50.

Three relays were automatic state qualifiers, the first place 4 x 800 meter relay team of Garrett Fulgham, Joseph Reed, Jackson Reed and Cade Flatt, with an exciting finish for first at the line. Also qualifying for state was the 4 x 100 relay with team members Caleb Ferguson, Will McGee, Wade Derington and Tanner Clough and 4 x 400 relay team of Daniel Lepore, Joseph Reed, Jackson Reed and Cade Flatt, both taking second place.

Two other Marshals cracked the top three, Bryce Ladd took third in the pole vault and Aaron Reed placed third in the triple jump.

For the Marshall County girl’s team, Tori McCracken took first in the high jump with 5-00 and Kirsten Walker first in the shot put with 33-03.00 to punch their automatic ticket to the state meet, as well as Abigail Oakley with a second place finish in the discus.

Rounding out top three performances for the girls, Paige Henson placed third in the triple jump and Audrey Grizzard and Sydney Temple tied for third in the pole vault.

On the girl’s side, several athletes were multiple winners starting with Hopkinsville’s Jakayla McSwain who took first in the 100 and 200 meters. Breanna Alderton of Owensboro took first in the 800 and 1600 meters, Graves County’s Sophie Galloway won the long jump and triple jump and was an extremely close second to Hopkinsville’s Avery O’Hara in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Galloway set a new Region 1 meet record in the triple jump with 37-06.00 and Henderson’s Jaci Bickett improved upon her Region 1 record in the pole vault with 12-06.

Owensboro won the girl’s Region 1 team title followed by Hopkinsville in second. Marshall County placed fifth.
