Marshals split games in St. Louis, play three in Louisville this week

A double-header in St. Louis against Clayton, MO on Saturday began the Marshals Spring Break series of games, then they head to Louisville for three days of games Monday through Wednesday. They will play Butler Monday, Fairdale Tuesday and an opponent to be determined on Wednesday.

Backing up to last Tuesday, the Marshals beat Lyon County 3-2 on six hits. Down 1-0 in the first inning, the Marshals scored in the bottom of the inning on a two-out single by Cameron Ives that scored Jackson Beal. They went up 2-1 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Beal that scored C.J. Johnson.

Lyon County tied the game in the top of the third, scoring on a wild pitch but a Drake Anderson single brought in Cole Griggs in the bottom of the sixth for the win. Marshall hits came from Beal, Griggs, Ives, Anderson, Austin and a double by Johnson. JC Goins got the win in six innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and two runs.


Carlisle County handed the Marshals their first loss of the season on Friday in a 7-6 game. Both teams put three runs on the board in the first inning that began with the Comets scoring on an RBI triple by Ian Fry, a double from Michael Thomason and RBI single by Jake Hobbs.

The Marshals answered with three runs scoring on a double by Griggs, double by Cameron Ives and sacrifice fly by Anderson. Carlisle County scored four runs in the second to stretch their lead out to 7-3 but the Marshals closed the gap with a two-run bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Cole Austin and an error and would add one more run in the sixth on an error.

Saturday in St. Louis, the Marshals split a double-header against Clayton, losing 6-5 in the first game and winning 11-0 in the second. In game one, the two teams were tied 4-4 after seven innings, before the Marshals took the lead in the top of the eighth on a single by Dyke that scored Anderson, but Clayton tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, getting the walk-off victory on a fly ball to centerfield. Hunter was the winning pitcher for Clayton in 5.2 innings of work, giving up four hits and two runs.

Weston Harper pitched a complete game in the second game of the double-header, picking up the shut out win for the Marshals 11-0, allowing just four hits. The Marshals scored three runs in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and a four run seventh inning. Dawson Smothers went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs and Griggs was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.
