Lady Marshals fall to Murray in Region 1 Tournament title game

Region 1 Tournament runner-up Lady Marshals.

MURRAY – Murray High’s Lady Tigers are the Region 1 Champions after defeating the Lady Marshals 51-32 Saturday, successfully defending last years title, going undefeated against Region 1 teams for the second straight year. The Lady Tigers will meet Region 5 winner Nelson County (30-3) in the first round of the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Wednesday at 1:30 at Northern Kentucky University.

In post game comments, Lady Marshals Head Coach Joseph Simmons said Murray’s been the best team in the region for two straight years but he was happy with the fight, heart and determination his players showed in the game.

“We gave it our best shot and still came up short but this one game does not define our season”, said Simmons of his team’s 27 wins.

Down 4-0 to the Lady Tigers, a 3-pointer by Hannah Langhi got the Lady Marshals on the board. Trailing 11-9 at the end of the quarter, a foul on Macey Turley sent her to the line with one tenth of a second on the clock, and she made both for a 13-9 Murray lead.

Murray’s damage came in the second quarter, with seven of their 18 points coming from Turley and getting a final shot before the buzzer by Maddie Waldrop to lead 31-15 at halftime.

The Lady Marshals held Murray to nine third quarter points but wasn’t able to make any headway, scoring just three points in the quarter from Miyah Davis and trailed 40-20.

Murray took their largest lead in the fourth quarter, leading by 24 points, but the Lady Marshals scored the final five points of the game on a three by Davis and free throws from Jessica Hicks to finish out the game.

The Lady Marshals say goodbye to five seniors, Hannah Langhi, Paige Henson, Lexee Miller, Miyah Davis and manager Ally Terrell, leaders on the team who have been a pleasure to watch and a great example for players that will come through the program behind them.

They finish their season 27-8, the second most wins of any Region 1 team behind Graves County with 28. Half of their losses came from the Lady Tigers.

Murray’s Brittany Lawson received the Rex Alexander Award and the Joey Fosko Tournament MVP went to Macey Turley. Lady Marshals Miyah Davis and Hannah Langhi were All-Tournament Team selections.
