Marshals fall to McCracken County in Region 1 Tournament

Aaron Reed battles through McCracken County defenders Alex Hagan (24) and Rook Ellington (5) in Thursday’s Region 1 Tournament quarter-final game.

MURRAY – Marshall County and McCracken County squared off in the first round of the boy’s Region 1 Tournament Thursday at the CFSB Center. The Marshals and Mustangs split their games in the regular season but it was McCracken County’s night as they defeated the Marshals 47-30 to advance to the semi-finals Monday against Graves County who defeated Fulton County 73-51 in the second game of the night.

Skyler Smith hit two three’s in the Marshals Region 1 Tournament loss to McCracken County.

The Mustangs led 5-2 at the end of the low-scoring first quarter, all five points coming from Tyce Daniel, while the Marshals only two points were from the opening basket of the game by Aaron Reed.

McCracken County stretched out their lead in the second quarter to 7-3 following a basket by Nathan Stoneciper, getting a couple of three’s in the quarter by Will Sivills and Cameron Cartwright to lead 15-7 and a final first half basket from Alex Hagan for a 17-7 halftime lead.

The shots just weren’t falling for the Marshals in the first half and that trend continued as they fell behind 25-11 in the third quarter after a 3-pointer by Cartwight.  Reed scored and drew the foul for the Marshals for the three point play to cut the Mustangs lead to 11 points and they would finish the quarter out-scoring the Marshals 6-2 to lead 31-16.

A basket by Bryce Flatt and free throw from Dylan Walters pulled the Marshals to within 13 points early in the fourth quarter but the Mustangs lead stretched to 40-24 at the mid-way point in the quarter, and they began working the ball around taking time off the clock.

Under three minutes to play, McCracken County freshman Jackson Sivills drained a three to give the Mustangs a 19 point lead.

McCracken County led by 20 points with under a minute remaining and a final 3-pointer by Skyler Smith gave the Marshals their final points in the season ending loss.

Reed led all scorers with 15 points, was 5 for 5 at the free throw line and led the Marshals with 5 rebounds. Daniel led McCracken County with 10 points and 9 rebounds. The Marshals finish the season 21-11.

On Monday in the boy’s semi-finals, Mayfield and Tilghman will face off in the first game at 6:00 followed by McCracken County and Graves County in the second semi-final.
