Marshals earn spot in district title game with win over the Lakers

DRAFFENVILLE – The Marshals earned their place in the District Four championship game and Region One Tournament with their 48-38 win over Calloway County Friday and made their intentions known right from the opening tip. The Marshals built an 18-0 lead over the Lakers on six points by Matt French, five from Dylan Walters, four by Aaron Reed and Houston Harvey with three before a three by Jeremy Darnell put points on the board for Calloway County. Darnall added another three to fuel the Lakers 10-0 run to end the first quarter trailing 18-10.

Two more points from Isaiah Butler and the Marshals lead was cut to six points before a basket by Walters ended the Lakers 12-0 run. Bryce Flatt added four points for the Marshals off the bench before Harvey scored the final four points of the half to give Marshall County a 29-17 lead.

Calloway County opened the second half with two three’s by Kamden Price and a basket by Aaron Dawson to cut the Marshals lead to six at 31-25. The Marshals stretched it back out to nine points but another Calloway three by Darnell cut the lead back to six again before two straight jumpers by Tyler Stokes and a final free throw by Walters gave the Marshals a 40-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Matt French gave the Marshals a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter and they would go up by 12 on a coast to coast basket by Reed with under two minutes remaining for a 48-36 lead with Calloway putting the final two points on the board in the game on free throws by Jonah Brannon.

The Marshals picked up their 20th win at St. Mary Saturday 53-28 over the Vikings led by Aaron Reed with 15 points and 8 rebounds. St. Mary senior John MacCauley scored 20 of St. Mary’s 28 points and was a perfect 12 of 12 at the free throw line.

The Marshals led 16-6 at the end of the first quarter, 23-11 at half time and 41-21 at the end of the third quarter.

Two more games left this week on the regular schedule, Tuesday at home against Mayfield (18-8) and Thursday at Christian County (22-6).
