Murray clinched #1 seed with win over Lady Marshals

MURRAY – The Murray High Lady Tigers clinched the number one seed in the district tournament and an automatic spot in the First Region Tournament with their 57-39 win over the Lady Marshals Tuesday. The Lady Marshals will be the two seed with a win over Calloway County on Friday and will play the Lady Lakers no matter the outcome of Friday’s game in the first round District Tournament game at Marshall County on Monday, February 20th.

Currently the 13th ranked team in the state, the Lady Tigers took the number two ranked in the nation (February 1st) and Tennessee’s number one ranked Riverdale from Murfreesboro, to overtime on Saturday, falling 75-68.

Against the Lady Marshals, Murray was first on the board on a free throw by Alexia Burpo and basket from Maddie Waldrop for an early 3-0 lead. Baskets by Lexee Miller and Paige Henson got the Lady Marshals on the board, trailing 5-4. The Lady Marshals fell behind by six points but cut it to four at 14-10 on a basket by Hannah Langhi to end the first quarter.

Murray began the second quarter on a 7-0 run to go up 21-10 on baskets from Waldrop, Lex Mayes and a three-point play by Macey Turley. Coming out of a time out, the Lady Marshals cut the Murray lead back to seven on baskets by Miyah Davis and Langhi but the Lady Tigers would stretch it back out to 10, leading 27-17 and finish the half leading 29-19 behind 14 first half points from Waldrop.

A turnover by the Lady Marshals to start the second half led to a basket by Burpo who put the Lady Tigers up by 12 points. The Lady Marshals cut it to a nine point deficit before Murray went back up by 14 on a 3-pointer by Brittany Lawson and free throws from Burpo. The lead was cut to 11 on a three from Davis and the Lady Marshals would trail by that same margin to end of the third quarter down 40-29.

Murray led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter when Waldrop made it a 53-33 game, but cut to 16 on four straight points by Langhi. A free throw by Mayes put the Murray lead back to 17 points with one minute remaining with a fresh five from the Lady Marshal bench coming in to finish out the game. A Mayes 3-pointer put the Lady Tigers up 57-39, the final score at the buzzer.
