Marshals split games in Gunner’s Magic Train Shootout

DRAFFENVILLE – Friday’s games in the Gunner’s Magic Train Shootout ended with the Marshals and Mustangs taking the floor in another classic battle between the two MCHS’s. The Marshals beat McCracken County earlier this season 54-44 but the Mustangs turned the tables this time, taking the win 43-39.

A low-scoring first quarter ended on a three by McCracken’s Will Sivills to put the Mustangs up 7-6. That lead to a combined 36 points in the second quarter for the two teams, a quarter that found the Marshals trailing by as much as nine at one point before a couple of timely three’s by Houston Harvey drew them back to within three points at 20-17.

Sivills and Skyler Smith exchanged three’s to keep the game within three points before McCracken County finished the quarter out on a 5-1 run to lead 28-21, getting a final basket on a half-court buzzer beater by Cameron Cartwright.

Harvey opened the second half with his third 3-pointer of the game to cut McCracken County’s lead to four and they would get no closer throughout the quarter, trailing 34-30 going into the fourth.

A basket by Aaron Reed pulled the Marshals to within two points going on to tie 36-36 following a steal by Harvey to Walters for the lay in. A slam by Tyce Daniel who led the Mustangs in the game with 16 points, put them back up by four but the Marshals closed the gap to two again on free throws by Aaron Reed with 2:19 left on the clock.

Sivills hit two free throws with 1:12 left to give the Mustangs a four point lead again, having a chance to go up by six on free throws by Nathan Stonecipher who missed both with 38 second left. Daniels was fouled and made one at the line with 23 seconds to go to give the Mustangs a 43-38 lead with the Marshals final point coming on a free throw by Harvey.

Harvey and Walters led the Marshals with 12 points a piece while Daniel led McCracken County with 16 points.

In their second game of the Gunner’s Magic Train Classic on Saturday, the Marshals played McKenzie, TN and defeated the Rebels 65-50. Leading 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Marshals led throughout much of the second quarter but McKenzie would steadily close the gap and finally take the lead on a long 3-point buzzer beater by Paul Watkins to go up 29-28 at halftime.

Matt French scored and was fouled to open the second half, hitting the free throw to put the Marshals back up by two followed by two straight 3-pointers from Harvey for a 37-29 lead. Their lead stretched out to 14 points but was cut to 12 on another goal at the buzzer by McKenzie’s Watkins.

The Marshals out-scored the Rebels 13-10 in the fourth quarter for the 15 point win, led in the quarter by Walters with six points who led all scorers in the game with 22.

The 13-6 Marshals will play Lyon County (10-8) at home on Tuesday. The Lyons played Friday in the Gunner Shootout, beating Arnold, FL 73-57.
