The 8th grade Gifted and Talented Enrichment class at South Marshall Middle School has learned citizenship through action with a service project. They were given the challenge to find out more about their community and help to solve a community need through planning and carrying out a service project. Students had to learn about our community through research of public statistics, discussions with Glenda Byers, Coordinator of the Roots to Wings Youth Service Center, and reading and discussing recent local news articles related to our community. Awareness of community issues brought to their attention that some families struggle to be able to provide for basic needs and often reach out to the Youth Service Centers at their local schools. Students entered into thought-provoking action, planned, and carried out the SMMS Hygiene Haul-in. Students had to organize the project from the ground up and gained first hand experience in practicing the targeted skills for all Marshall County School students in the areas of citizenship, critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and developing their personal character to be a productive member of society. The SMMS Hygiene Haul-In was a huge success with a grand total of 1,963 items donated to provide for the basic needs of our community.
