Beckett a part of Brevard College’s D1 National Championship

SNOWSHOE, WV – Marshall County 2016 graduate, Carson Beckett, helped lead the Brevard College (NC) Cycling Team to their first ever Division I National Championship this past weekend at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Snowshoe, West Virginia, taking the podium four times.

Beckett competed in four events at Snowshoe – Short Track, Cross Country, Downhill and Team Relay and finished 4th on the podium in the Varsity Individual Omnium, a combination of overall points from all events, with teammate Walker Shaw (Hendersonville, NC) taking 2nd. The Brevard girl’s captured three of the five podium spots in the omnium with Sarah Hill (Bryanston, Johannesburg) claiming the national title, while teammates Allison Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) and Hannah Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) finished fourth and fifth.

Events began Friday in cold, windy, rainy conditions with the Short Track race and Beckett finished 4th in the field of 74 varsity riders. The Brevard girls dominated the Short Track event with Hannah Arensman claiming 2nd, Sarah Hill 3rd, Allison Arensman 4th and Janelle Cole (Rockford, MI) 6th.

Saturday brought strong winds, snow and freezing wind chills to greet the riders for the Cross Country race which was won by Eivind Roed of Colorado Mesa University, with Beckett claiming 8th place. In the girl’s race, Brevard’s Sarah Hill captured 2nd, Allison Arensman 4th and Hannah Arensman 5th to round out the podium.

Trying his hand at the collegiate level in gravity events, Beckett competed in Downhill and placed 19th, earning points towards the overall individual omnium. Gravity specialists teammates Kyle Grau (Brevard, NC) and Walker Shaw gave Brevard a 2nd and 5th place respectively in the Downhill.

The final day on Sunday started with the Team Relay with Brevard taking the title with the team of Beckett, Allison Arensman, Zach Valdez (Hemet, CA) and Hannah Arensman.

Dual Slalom was the final event of the national championships with Brevard’s Kyle Grau and Walker Shaw taking 6th and 7th.
