MURRAY – Calloway County put an end to the Marshals soccer season in Wednesday’s 2nd District semi-final for the second straight year, and for the second straight year in Marshall County soccer program history, both the Marshals and Lady Marshals will not advance to the 1st Region Tournament in the same season.

After more than a decade of dominance for both the Marshall County boys and girls teams, the 2nd District teams have closed that gap over the last few years to produce some of the best teams in the region.

“This wasn’t even a very good soccer game tonight”, Head Coach Andy Pagel said. “I’m not saying we didn’t play hard, we just didn’t play well and I would say that Coach Walandro would say the same thing about his own team. We made some mistakes, like unnecessary fouls, not slowing down and working the ball. We just kind of got in our own way tonight.”

A scoreless game until 8:55 in the first half, Ty Stom put the Lakers on the board first that just over two minutes later was equaled by Marshall’s Caleb McNeely following a throw in by Daniel Gardner. Brian Wilhelm made it a 2-1 game for Calloway County in the second half that would hold up to give the Lakers a berth in the 2nd District Championship game Thursday against Graves County.

The Marshals will say good-bye to eight seniors wh0 Coach Pagel said are, “fun to be around and a good group of guys”.

The Marshals finished the game with 15 shots, 6 on goal, 2 corners and a record of 12-6-2. Calloway had 15 shots, 4 on goal and 10 corners in their win and will play Graves County Thursday in the 2nd District Championship.

Caleb McNeely double teamed by Calloway's Christian Bobo (8) and Ty Stom (19), scored the Marshals only goal in their 2nd District semi-final loss.
