March On

My mega-musically talented teen and I had a deep theological discussion as we drove home from the band’s first big performance the other night. We came to the conclusion that church could be compared to a marching band. God is the director. Jesus is our song. Although we’re all playing the same tune, we do it in different parts that require various methods. If this assembly of Jesus followers wants to cover any ground, we better be marching together. And it better be towards God. If one of us gets out of step or is out of key, it messes with the entire harmony. One member not deeply familiar with the marching plan or the song affects us all and has the potential to bring about disaster and make us all look bad.

If we can get the melody in our hearts, keep moving and get serious about our small part in this large production, the song will win the hearts of others.

We’re not a soloist in a one man band. We’re part of something bigger, bolder and more beautiful. Trying to do it alone is impossible. We need each other. Wouldn’t it be cool if the book of life is actually a musical?
