Study shows Kentucky students lack a ‘prominent voice’

(AP) A report by student voice leaders has found that students in Kentucky lack a prominent voice in school improvement.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that the “Student as Partners” report by Kentucky’s Prichard Committee Student Voice Team found that only six percent of school decision-making councils in the state have advisory student members and two percent have voting student members. Additionally, the report found that nine percent of school boards have student members, but all of them are advisory.

The report, released Tuesday, surveyed 189 schools in Kentucky. It offers recommendations that include creating a platform where students can share their perspectives with educators.

Project leader Eliza Jane Schaeffer says she hopes the report encourages Kentucky to recognize that students’ voices offer more opportunity to improve the state’s school system.
