BOWLING GREEN – The Marshall County boy’s golf team officially kicked off the 2016 season at the Gator Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club Friday. This will be same venue where the KHSAA Boys State Championship Golf tournament will be held in October.
The tournament played host to some of the best teams in the state of Kentucky such as St. Xavier, Greenwood, Lexington Christian, South Warren, Taylor County, McCracken County and Marshall County.
The team finished 7th in a field of 17 teams with the low round coming from Quinn Eaton whose 1-under 71 put him in a tie for 4th. St. Xavier won the tournament with a team score of 290.
Behind Eaton, scoring for the Marshals was Jay Nimmo with 77, Tyler Powell 81, Grant Hackney 82 and Garrett Howell shot 83.
Coach Bell’s take away from the first tournament of the season was very positive. “I really feel good about the team’s performance at this tournament. Our players were paired with some of the best players in the state and proved to themselves that can play with them. Everyone got off to a great start in the beginning of the tournament.
There was an hour and half weather delay after the first couple of holes, but we came back out and continued to play well. During the back nine holes, our focus may have suffered a little from heat and humidity but overall the kids played through it and performed well.”
Monday, the team will be back in Bowling Green to play in a tournament at Olde Stone Country Club then head to Lexington to play in the Kentucky Cup at the University Club of Kentucky Wildcat course.
Team members for the 2016 season are Quinn Eaton, Garrett Howell, Drew Putteet, Grant Hackney, Nathan Clark, Tyler Powell, Ben Staples, Jay Nimmo, Drake Butler and Nick Dowdy.
