Land Between the Lakes Quota Deer Hunt Applications Available July 1-31

DeerLAND BETWEEN THE LAKES, KY/TN – June 30, 2016 – Hunters may apply for the annual Quota Deer Hunts from July 1-31, 2016.

Based upon data indicating a deer population decline, Land Between the Lakes solicited public comment regarding changes to hunting regulations earlier in 2016.

We are moving forward with the regulation changes, which benefit our deer herd and our recreating public,” says Environmental Stewardship manager John Westbrook. “We will monitor the effects of these changes and determine the results for long term positive impacts on population trends. We will continue to seek public input on this and future proposals for their help in assessing the results.”

Hunt regulation changes were the result of science-based management concerns and combined substantial feedback from hunters. Land Between the Lakes continues to focus efforts to provide future hunting opportunities while balancing management goals and public interest.

Land Between the Lakes, in cooperation with state wildlife agencies, amended the hunting regulations for 2016-17. The Kentucky archery season and bag limit changed to decrease hunting pressure on the population. Officials at Land Between the Lakes also removed the bonus deer tag in 2016-17. All hunters should read the revised regulations before planning their trip.

Quota hunts provide unique recreational opportunities within the region and help maintain a healthy deer population. All quota hunt permits will be either-sex permits. There is a one (1) antlered buck limit on Land Between the Lakes. The rule applies in the Kentucky and Tennessee portions during archery season and quota hunts.

Land Between the Lakes features both adult and youth hunts. The youth hunt in the Kentucky portion is for those ages 15 and younger. On the Tennessee portion youth ages range from 6 to 16 years. Youth hunters must possess a state-approved hunter safety card. Youth not required to have a hunter safety card must carry a signed safety verification form available on the Land Between the Lakes website. An adult over the age of 21 must accompany and supervise each youth.
