A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans milling and paving along US 68/KY 80 in the LBL area of western Trigg County starting TODAY. The contractor will be milling out sections of US 68/KY 80 through Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area between the Eggners Ferry Bridge work zone at mile marker 0.0 and the Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton at mile point 8.5 starting today. The milling will be followed by paving along this section on Tuesday and Wednesday. Motorists driving US 68/KY 80 through LBL should be alert for sections of one lane traffic required to facilitate the work. The contractor is working to correct a number of dips that have developed along this section of US 68/KY 80. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and maintenance personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow. Additionally, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans a daytime lane restriction on the US 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton in Trigg County on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. This daytime lane restriction is to allow deck repairs on the existing US 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge. Motorists should be alert for one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers from approximately 7:30 a.m., CDT, to about 4:30 p.m., on Wednesday. Delays should be minimal, generally less than 4 minutes. The contractor will be pouring concrete to repair the deck and driving surface prior to the start of the busy July 4th Independence Day travel period. Steel plates will be placed over the repaired areas while the concrete is allowed to cure. The contractor will have a brief lane restriction on Thursday or Friday to allow the steel plates to be removed. The US 68/KY 80 Cumberland River/Lake Barkley Bridge, also known as the Lawrence Memorial Bridge and the Canton Bridge, carries approximately 3,800 vehicles across Lake Barkley/The Cumberland River in an average day. The bridge is located at US 68 mile point 8.596 in Trigg County and serves as the eastern entrance to Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. The bridge is at Cumberland River navigational mile point 63.1. As a reminder, the US 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton is within the work zone for construction of a new bridge. This work zone has a 45 mph speed limit. PCL Civil Construction of Denver is the contractor on the new $128.3 million Lake Barkley Bridge immediately downstream from the existing structure. The new Lake Barkley Bridge is expected to be open to traffic by October 2017. It will be of a basket handle arch design to match the New Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake at Aurora.
