Marshals split games with Clayton in Big Orange Classic

DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County Baseball hosted the Big Orange Classic Friday at Saturday with teams from Graves County, Murray, Pinckneyville, IL and Clayton, MO.

The Marshals played Clayton twice in the Classic, splitting games with the Missouri team, winning 11-4 Friday and dropping Saturday’s game 11-7.

In Friday’s win, the Marshals led 4-2 after the 1st inning, adding 2 more runs in the 2nd with Jackson Beal scoring on a wild pitch, his 2nd run scored in the game, and Derek Doss, running for Cody Clark, scoring to make it a 6-2 Marshall lead.

Travis Tack scored a run in the 3rd inning after leading off with a double and the lead stretched to 8-2 when Justice Beal scored on an error.

Cole Griggs drove in Tack on a double in the 4th inning to go up 9-2, a lead that Clayton cut to 9-3 in the top of the 5th. The Marshals added 2 more runs in the 5th and a final run was scored by Clayton with 2 outs in the 7th.

Cameron Ives recorded the win with 4 innings of work on the mound, striking out 6 and allowing no hits and 2 runs.

Clayton reversed roles on Saturday by taking an 11-7 victory on 11 hits despite the Marshals 4-0 lead after the 1st inning which began on a single by Justice Beal who scored on an error, Doss (running for Clark) scored on a fly ball single by Lance Dyke, Ives scored on a fielder’s choice and Drake Anderson scored on a single by Tack.

The Marshals went up 5-0 in the 5th before Clayton put together a 5-run 3rd inning to tie the game up. Clayton added 3 runs in the 4th to lead 8-5 that the Marshals cut to two on an RBI single by Cole Austin.

Clayton stretched their lead out to 11-6 in the 6th and the Marshals mustered 1 more run in the 7th when Austin scored on a fielder’s choice.

The Marshals lost earlier in the week 4-2 to Ballard Memorial after leading 2-0, Ballard scored 4 runs in the 5th inning for the win. J.C. Goins pitched 6 innings, striking out 9 batters, giving up 5 hits and allowing 4 runs. Clark was 1/3 with an RBI, Jackson Beal 1/3 and Anderson 1/3 with an RBI.
