District win over Murray 5th straight for the Lady Marshals

MURRAY – After their season opener loss to #1 McCracken County, the Lady Marshals have won the next five straight games which include going 4-0 in the Lady Marshal Slugfest and picking up their first district win of the season on Thursday at Murray High.

The Lady Marshals beat the Lady Tigers 17-4 on 16 hits and 3 errors in 7 innings after trialing  4-0 until the top of the 4th when they got on the board with 2 runs, adding 3 in the top of the 5th to take a 5-4 lead.

They added 7 runs in a 6th inning rally that began with a 1-out single by Mackenzie Harper, double by Lexee Miller and walk by Abby Fiessinger that loaded the bases. That was followed by Payton Smother’s single that put the Lady Marshals up 7-4.

A single by Kenslie Cross, Addie Young reachedd on an error, sacrifice by Gracey Murt and single by Gabi Snow rounded out the inning on a 12-4 Lady Marshal lead.

Five more runs were added to the scoreboard in the top of the 7th. Miller and Bailey Murphy led with singles then Fiessinger reached on an error to load the bases once more. Miller scored on the error and a double by Smothers drove in Fiessinger. An RBI single by Cross brought in Smothers for the 17-4 win.

Gabi Snow got the win on the mound, striking out 2 batter and allowing no hits and no runs.

The Lady Marshals won all four of their games in the annual Lady Marshal Slugfest March 18-19. Twenty-three games were played over the 2-day Slugfest with games at the Lady Marshals home field and Mike Miller Park. In their first game on Friday against Mahomet-Seymour from Mahomet, IL, the girls won 13-0 on 13 hits behind the hitting of Miller who was 2/4 with a double and 2 RBIs, Smothers 2/3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Cross 3/3 with an RBI and Murphy 2/2 with an RBI. Snow picked up the win pitching 3 innings, striking out 4 and allowing no hits and no runs. The save went to Briley English.

In Friday’s 2nd game, the Lady Marshals beat Union City in 5 innings on 14 hits. Hitting power came from Miller who went 3/3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Fiessinger was 2/3 with a double and 3 RBIs, Smothers 2/4 with 3 RBIs and Murphy 2/3 with a triple and an RBI. Snow picked up the win pitching 3 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 runs and English got the save.

Saturday against Boone County, the Lady Marshals put up 10 runs in the 7th inning to close the game on an 18-3 victory on 18 hits. Fiessinger was 4/5 at the plate with a double and 6 RBIs, Smothers 3/4 with a home run, triple and 2 RBIs, Miller hit a triple and Murphy a double. Snow pitched 3 innings, struck out 4, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs for the win with the save going to English who pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 run.

In their final game of the Slugfest against Jeffersontown of Louisville, the Lady Marshals held off a late game rally from the Lady Chargers who scored 5 runs in the 6th and 2 in the 7th, but held on to win 9-7 on 11 hits. Murphy was 3/4 at the plate with a double, home runs came from Fiessinger and Harper and a triple by Addie Young. Snow picked up the win going 5.1 innings, striking out 3 and allowing 4 hits and no runs.
