Marshall County 4-Hers Reach for the Summit

2016 4-H Summit Marshall County Delegates

Six Marshall County 4-H middle school members participated in the 11th Annual Kentucky 4-H Summit the weekend of March 18th. The delegates were Andrew Phillips, Gabe Driskell, Courtney Phillips, Zoey Ramsey, Baella Morgan, and Anna Dittman.

Over 200 youth participated in this second of three 2016 Kentucky 4-H Summit sessions held at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center in Jabez. The summit is designed for middle school youth to strengthen their leadership and communication skills while meeting others from across the state. The participants also learn more about the opportunities available to them as teens in the Kentucky 4-H program.

The delegates participated in workshops and funshops, team-building activities, and a program led by the Kentucky 4-H Performing Arts Troupe. Workshops and funshops offered included team building, various craft classes, gaga ball, performing arts, and much more. The delegates were encouraged to take what they learned at the workshops and help 4-H leaders teach those activities in their respective counties.

This was Andrew’s third year to attend 4-H Summit. He commented that “I learned that while working in a group on an activity, you need to express your ideas. A good leader will make sure that all ideas are heard. As a “veteran,” Summit has helped me become more socially comfortable with others.”

First year attendee, Zoey noted “Summit was an amazing thing. I loved it!…It was a great leadership camp…I will definitely go again next year.”

Lena Mallory, Marshall County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, chaperoned the delegation and provided transportation. She also led the “Snapping Into Electricity” workshop with 31 participants over three sessions.

4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.
