GILBERTSVILLE – Third grade students from Sharpe Elementary and Calvert City Elementary worked jointly on a project to develop pancake recipes to present to IHOP.

According to Sharpe Elementary 3rd grade teacher Katee Adams, the project is a new style of teaching called Project-Based Learning, allowing students to dive into real world problems or connections and help create together.

“IHOP was a huge part of this process and brought authenticity to the project”, Adams said. “Students were able to get out of the norm of pencil and paper and grasp life skills with hands on activities to challenge them to grow into a vital influential piece of our community and society.”

The culmination of the “I Have Outstanding Pancakes” project took place Friday, March 4th, at the Kentucky Dam Convention Center with 25 teams, 11 from Sharpe and 14 from Calvert City, presenting their pancake recipes for judging. Judges were Superintendent Trent Lovett, the Manager of IHOP and Sydney, an MCHS culinary student.

And the winner….’Cookies ‘n Cream’ pancakes from Sharpe Elementary which included team members Daniel Bomar, Kinsley Moon, Kaylee Warren, Olivia Berry and Steven Bryant. Second place went to Sharpe Elementary’s Macy, Zach, Tasha, Matthew and Austin with ‘Oreo Crumble’ and third place was Calvert City’s ‘Cocoa Red’ from team members Jillian, Lauren, Briley and Charstyn.

Parents were able to taste-test the pancake creations and vote for their favorites in categories of  ‘People’s Choice’, ‘Tastiest’ and ‘Most Creative’. Winning the People’s Choice and Tastiest was ‘Fruit Explosion’ and Most Creative was a tie between ‘Fruit Explosion’ and ‘Rainbow Surprise’.
