Marshall County High School to screen educational documentary

“Beyond Measure,” a documentary film focused on the shift of school districts toward project-based instruction and learning, will be shown at the Kenneth Shadowen Performing Arts Center, Benton, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27.

The Shadowen Center is located on the campus of Marshall County High School at 416 High School Road. Screening of the movie will constitute the afternoon session of the West Kentucky Educational Cooperative’s monthly board meeting. The agenda portion of the meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Trigg County School System, Cadiz, is one of four districts featured prominently in the San Diego, Calif.-produced documentary, which shares its name with a book by Vicki Abeles. Ms. Abeles, noted education advocate who will be in attendance for the screening, co-directed another educational documentary, “Race to Nowhere,” in 2007. “Beyond Measure” features schools from across the country that are challenging traditional education models and transferring emphasis away from homework, top grades and test scores toward engagement, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

Marshall County School System, though not featured in the film, is actively engaged in project-based instruction. Following the screening, superintendents and staff from both the Trigg County and Marshall County School Systems, will discuss the innovative instruction taking place in their districts.

The West Kentucky Educational Cooperative (WKEC) serves 25 rural public school districts and one diocese in far western Kentucky.
