Update on area road conditions and next round of winter weather

The National Weather Service in Paducah has ended the winter storm warning for all of western Kentucky.

The active winter weather has moved into Tennessee, where a winter storm warning is in effect until 6pm today.

Patchy light snow or freezing drizzle may linger this morning across the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky. Accumulating snowfall has ended — mostly about an inch on average — but untreated roads will remain slick and hazardous.

An approaching storm system will bring another wintry mix of precipitation and strong winds to the region on Thursday and Friday. At this time, the potential exists for substantial accumulations of ice and snow.

Meanwhile, highway crews are getting some help from rising temperatures this morning. Pavement temperatures are at or near 32 degrees where the snowfall has stopped and skies have cleared. Sunshine expected today will help to continue warming pavement temperatures and activate the salt and other ice-fighting chemicals spread through the night.

Overnight, crews were concentrating mostly on highways, interstates, and parkways. They expect to move to the less-traveled secondary roads through the day. Motorists are reminded that there continue to be slick spots.

Accumulation totals came in generally lower than anticipated for this first round of sleet and snow. The sleet that fell was fairly pelletized making it plow more like snow.
