Marshals sweep Hoopfest games with victory over Pope County

BENTON – D.J. Pigg dropped in 18 points to lead the Marshals in scoring in their 75-36 win over Pope County, IL in Saturday’s morning session of the Hoopfest. Aaron Reed and Pigg combined for the Marshals first nine points of the game holding Pope County to two.

Dylan Walters and Pigg added two more baskets for a 13-2 Marshals lead before Pope County hit their second field goal of the game. Brady Morgan, Reed and Pigg combined for the next 12 points followed by a basket at the buzzer by Cameron Thurman for a 25-13 first quarter lead.

Skyler Smith opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer followed by two free throws from Walters and four straight by Matthew French on their way to out-scoring Pope County 30-15 in the second quarter to lead 55-25 at halftime.

Right before the halftime break, Pope County’s Zach Fasolo hit the floor following an attempted block, breaking both arms in the process. Thoughts and prayers to Zach in his recovery.

The Marshals would go on to out-score Pope County 20-11 in the second half hitting 89.4% of their free throws in the game and out-rebounding Pope County 32-21.
