Marshals down Dyersburg 57-54 in Hoopfest

BENTON – Marshall County boys opened the Friday evening Hoopfest session with a 57-52 win over Dyersburg, TN, a game that was closely contested throughout with the Trojans staying close each time the Marshals put some distance between them by dropping in three’s, hitting eight in the game.

Seven first quarter points by D.J. Pigg led the Marshals to a 18-12 first quarter lead. Dyersburg out-scored the Marshals 11-6 in the second quarter to pull to within one point at halftime.

The Marshals out-scored Dyersburg 33-29 in the second half with help at the line, hitting 5 of 5 in the third quarter and 10 of 18 in the fourth.
Down 52-46, Dyersburg got a timely steel by Kevin Spencer to pull to within four of the Marshals with a minute and a half to go.

A free throw by Aaron Reed and field goal by Dawson Jolley put the Marshals back up seven points, cut to four on a 3-pointer by Jadrius Jenkins with 26 seconds remaining. Pigg went to the line and dropped in both of his free throws with one more at the line added by Dyersburg’s Hunter Mann to close out the game.

Dylan Walters led the Marshals with 18 points and was selected game MVP with Skylar Smith adding 10 points. Dyersburg was led by Spencer with 16 points. The Marshals won the battle on the boards out-rebounding the Trojans 33-19.

The Marshals will play their second Hoopfest game on Saturday at noon against Pope County, IL.
