BENTON – The Humane Society of Marshall County hopes to find forever homes for some of its many dogs and kittens at its upcoming event, Red, White and Drool. The adoption drive will be held at CFSB on Fifth St. in Benton from 12-4 p.m. on July 10.

Kittens, which are normally $30, can be adopted at the adoption drive for $15. The adoption fee includes all vaccinations that are appropriate for their age. It does include microchipping, which costs an additional $15 and can be done on site. Kittens require a $50 spay/neuter deposit, which is refundable upon proof of the procedure.

Ashley Smith, director of the humane society, said the spay/neuter deposit is important to encourage owners to be an active part of the solution to the ongoing problem of pet overpopulation. The shelter is so full of kittens that there is currently a waiting list of owners who want to drop off animals. Smith said people have even dropped off stray or unwanted animals outside the shelter in sweltering heat. Smith asks that owners not drop off animals outside the facility, as it is dangerous for the animals. She also requests that anyone who can, pay to spay or neuter just one stray cat in your neighborhood or at the humane society. “If you can help with spaying or neutering any stray cats, every little bit helps the stray cat population,” she said.

Small dogs will also be available for a $90 adoption fee, which includes microchipping, spay/neuter and all vaccinations, including rabies and kennel cough.

Microchipping will also be available on site for $15 for dogs and cats. Membership information will also be available.

The humane society is also accepting arts and crafts donations for the second annual Art with Heart Auction, which will take place on Facebook from 9 a.m. Aug 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 14. All kinds of art are welcome for donations, including painting, jewelry, pottery, and embroidery. All proceeds will benefit animals at the shelter.

The humane society is also in need of donations and volunteers. Puppy food and kitten food are currently the most needed supplies. Click here for more info.
