DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County and Calloway County split their regular season games, but despite their 9-19 record coming into Wednesday’s 4th District Championship, the Lakers proved their record didn’t matter in post-season play with their 3-1 win over the Marshals.

Both scoreless through four innings, in a pitching battle between Calloway’s Bryce Orr and Marshall’s Hunter Jaco, the Lakers struck first in the fifth, scoring on a ground out by Jeremy Darnell for a 1-0 lead.

The Marshals tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Blake Johnson.
Mason Wooten led off in the sixth with a double, nudging Calloway into a pitching change, replacing Orr with Austin Anderson. A wild pitch sent Wooten over to third with no outs, but three straight outs by the next three up left him stranded on third.

Lofton Pigg led off with a single for the Lakers in the top of the seventh and a single by Dwyer was followed by a Marshall error that sent the base runners on around to second and third with no outs.

A sacrifice fly by Orr gave Calloway the go-ahead run and a sacrifice bunt by Anderson scored Travis Dwyer for a 3-1 Laker lead.
The Marshals made it interesting in their final at-bat with Jaco hitting a one out single followed up by a two-out single by Blake Johnson. Dalton Riley, running for Jaco made his way to third base with Johnson stealing second, but the final inning effort was cut short with the third out.

Jaco, in seven innings on the mound, allowed one earned run, no walks, struck out four and allowed seven hits. Calloway’s Anderson got the win in relief, pitching the final two innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

The Marshals will now wait for Friday’s draw to see who their opponent will be in the Region 1 Tournament which will be played at Marshall County May 25-27.

Along with Marshall County and Calloway County, teams advancing to the Region 1 Tournament are Graves County, Ballard Memorial, Tilghman, McCracken County, Carlisle County and Hickman County.
