Eddyville man charged with attempted murder of a police officer, housed in Marshall County Detention Center

johnsmithBENTON – An Eddyville man, charged with attempted murder of a police officer, is being held in the Marshall County Detention Center. According to police reports, Kentucky State Police Investigative Lieutenant Trent Weaver charged 51 year-old John C. Smith with three counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer (Class B felony), one count of Wanton Endangerment 1st degree police officer (Class D felony), Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon (Class C felony), and Possession of a Defaced Firearm (class A misdemeanor).

This follows an incident that occurred on May 9 when members of law enforcement attempted to serve a warrant at Smith’s residence. After displaying a weapon and laser pointing device toward officers, Smith was shot by KSP Trooper Eric Fields and hospitalized where he was later released after treatment of his injuries.
The investigation is continuing by Weaver.
