PADUCAH – Marshall County boys are the KHSAA Class 3A Region 1 Track and Field Champions for the first time in school history. The Marshall boys locked up the win well before the final events were scored but the girls were neck and neck until the final event of the meet with Owensboro taking second by just two points.
First and second place finishers received the automatic spot in the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Lexington with several more making the state meet on time.
Marshall County boys earning the automatic bid to state included Nathan Solomon who qualified in four events – 1st in the 200 meters, 1st in long jump, 2nd in the 400 and a member of the 1st place 4 x 400 relay team. Austin Shackleford and Jacob Carnine took 1st and 2nd in the 800 meters and both also qualified in the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays.
Collin Gunn also qualified in two events with 1st place finishes in both the 1600 meters and the 4 x 800 relay. Robert Blankenship will make the trip to state as part of the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams and Casey Gregory’s 1st place in the pole vault gave him the automatic bid.
The boys 4 x 400 relay is made up of Carnine, Shackleford, Blankenship and Solomon.
The boy’s 4 x 800 relay team of Carnine, Gunn, Shackleford and Blankenship are currently the number one ranked team in the state on time and will take that seed into the state meet in Lexington.
Earning a spot in the state meet in the next 10 best times and results in the state for the boys are Jack Brown in the 110 meter hurdles and Drey Reed in the high jump.
The Marshals earned 113 points to capture the Region 1 Championship with McCracken County taking second with 95.40 and Daviess County third with 68.50.
Marshall County girls earning the automatic spot in that state meet are Stephanie Russell placing 2nd in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, the 4 x 200 relay team, Michaela Manley with 2nd in the high jump, Sydney Goff 2nd in long jump, Sydney Nelson 2nd in shot put and Amber Crawford 2nd in discus.
Members of the 2nd place 4 x 200 relay team are Lexie Myers, Russell, Kara Kelley and Goff.
Earning a spot in the state meet in the next 10 best time and results in the state are Audrey Grizzard and Haley Swift in the pole vault, Sydney Goff in the 100 meter hurdles, Brandy Baas in the 300 meter hurdles and the girl’s 4 x 100, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams.
Jennifer Townsend, Baas, Russell and Kelley make up the 4 x 100 relay, Jazmine Rozycke, Myers, Goff and Melissa Ross the 4 x 400 relay and the 4 x 800 relay team of Bailey Sandlin, Spring Dolbee, Camryn Crass and Melissa Ross.
Owensboro’s 117.50 points was enough for first with the Lady Marshals in second with 115.50 points and Hopkinsville taking third with 76.
The KHSAA Class 3A State Track and Field Championships at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track Complex for Class 3A will begin on Saturday, May 23rd at 4:30.
