Murray-Calloway County Parks offering Red Cross authorized swim lessons

murray swim lessonsMURRAY – The Murray-Calloway County Parks & Recreation Department is once again offering the area’s only Red Cross authorized swimming lessons this summer.  Session dates are June 15-19, June 22-26, and July 6-10 and registration for each of the five-day sessions is now open at the park office at 900 Payne St.  Registration is $55 for each swimmer and sessions are filled on a first-come basis with class size limits to each level.

The Red Cross Learn To Swim program has a long affiliation with the Parks Department as thousands of babies, youth and adults from throughout the region have learned to swim in Murray’s Central Park pool since it opened in the mid-70s.  In addition to the Red Cross certification card, class participants will also receive a commemorative t-shirt upon program completion and certification.

Class run for five consecutive days/nights and are offered in the morning and evening during all three of the sessions.  The Parent-Child class will be offered in the second and third sessions only.  Swimmers can take classes at successive sessions and advance in Red Cross ratings over the summer.

The Red Cross program lessons start with Parent-Child aquatics for children six months to two years old where parents are actually in the pool with their kids.  The Learn To Swim program covers kids two and up to adults.

“Learning to swim is such an important life skill,” said Mike Sykes, MCC Parks Aquatics Director.  “Thousands of local citizens – young and old – have learned to swim through Red Cross lessons at our pool over the years.  Swimming lessons are another important part of what our parks offer to our community.”

Red Cross swim lessons are open to anyone locally or in neighboring communities.  Stop by or call the Murray-Calloway County Parks office to register or call 270.762.0325 for more information about the summer swim lesson program.
