Lady Marshals host Slugfest, sweep games for 3-0 start to the season

DRAFFENVILLE – Softball season began on the campus of Marshall County High School with the Lady Marshals Slugfest Friday and Saturday with games played at both the high school and Mike Miller Park.
The Lady Marshals took the field in their season-opener on Friday evening against Ballard Memorial posting a 9-3 over the Lady Bombers.

A single by McKensie Harper and walk by Abby Fiessinger set up the Lady Marshals first run of the game in the first inning that came on a ground out by Chaney Stearns.
Their five-run second inning started with a single by Kenslie Cross, a walk from Payton Smothers and Bailey Murphy taking first on a fielder’s choice with Smothers thrown out at second.

A single by Hailey Harrell scored Cross leaving Murphy and Harrell on base as Lexee Miller loaded them up reaching first on an error, setting up the perfect storm for Fiessinger who stepped up to the plate and hit a two-out grand slam to put the Lady Marshals up 6-0.

The Lady Marshals put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the third by McKensie Tack, running for Addie Young, who scored on a double by Murphy. Murphy stole third, going on to score on a wild pitch for a 8-0 lead.

They scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Stearns scored on a double to left field by Cross.
Ballard avoided the shut out, scoring twice in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh on a double by Leah Shelley who then stole third, scoring on a ground out hit by Shelby Amis.
Maegan Renfrow was on the mound for the Lady Marshals all seven inning giving up five hits and three runs.

This game was scoreless until the fifth inning when facing two outs, Fiessinger doubled to right field followed up with a homerun from Stearns for a 2-0 lead.
With one out and bases loaded in the sixth with Smothers, Harrell and Harper, Fiessinger tripled to left field scoring all three base runners for a 5-0 lead, adding the final run of the game on a single by Stearns that scored Fiessinger.
